How losing 50kg helped me speak louder and stand taller

Three years ago, I was carrying an extra 50 kilos on my body. I was also carrying the invisible weight of insecurity, self-doubt, and a fear of being seen. Yes, I was already a speaker, a coach, a business owner but behind the microphone, I sometimes felt like I was shrinking into myself.

Fast forward to today: I’ve lost 50 kilos, built strength, and transformed my health. But here’s the surprising truth: this isn’t just a physical story. Losing the weight has helped me become a better speaker, a more confident businesswoman, and a stronger leader. It taught me lessons about visibility, resilience, and the power of standing tall, literally and figuratively.

1. Visibility Isn’t Just About the Stage

When you’re carrying excess weight, it’s easy to want to hide. I wore baggy clothes, avoided cameras, and sometimes dreaded seeing photos of myself after events. I didn’t want the focus to be on me, I wanted it on my message.

But here’s the thing: when you’re hiding physically, you’re also hiding emotionally. Losing 50kg gave me the confidence to step into the spotlight fully. Now I embrace being visible, because I know people aren’t just buying my words, they’re buying my presence.

2. Confidence Comes From Backing Yourself

Weight loss is rarely linear. There were setbacks, plateaus, and times I thought, “What’s the point?” But pushing through taught me discipline and resilience.

That same inner grit shows up when I speak. I’m no longer afraid to pitch myself for a high-paying gig, negotiate my fee, or stand on a stage in front of hundreds of people. I back myself because I’ve already proven to myself that I can do hard things.

3. Strength Translates Into Presence

When I started strength training, I noticed something unexpected. It wasn’t just my body getting stronger—it was my voice. There’s something about physically feeling powerful that translates into how you carry yourself on stage.

Now, I stand taller. I move with intention. I project my voice with more authority. My audience feels that energy, and it draws them in. That shift didn’t come from a speaking course, it came from learning to respect and strengthen my body.

4. Impact Starts With Self-Leadership

Losing weight wasn’t about vanity, it was about becoming the kind of leader I wanted to be. If I expect my clients, audiences, and community to stretch themselves, I need to model what’s possible.

Every kilo lost was a reminder that I can change my own story. And when I share that story from the stage, people don’t just hear my words, they see the evidence. My transformation becomes a living, breathing example that transformation is possible for them, too.

Losing 50kg helped me speak louder and stand taller, but not just because of the physical change. It taught me to embrace visibility, to back myself, to carry strength into every presentation, and to lead with impact.

Today, I don’t shy away from the spotlight, I own it. Because the more confident I am in myself, the more powerfully I can serve others. And that, ultimately, is what being a great speaker is all about.
